Rising Damp Treatment

There is natural moisture surrounding most structures which can easily get into the walls.

Common building materials like brick and stone are naturally porous and soak up moisture which can lead to rising damp.

What is Damp?

Rising damp is the upward movement of moisture through walls and sometimes floors by capillary action from below the ground. It can rise to a usual maximum height of 900mm in the walls depending on the masonry types and outside ground levels.

Salt deposits generally form a horizontal tide mark, below which there will be discolouration, peeling wallpaper and possibly white efflorescent salts which have been drawn out of the brickwork by the water.  All buildings are surrounded by natural moisture that is trying to get into the dry structure of the building.

What is Cavity Wall Cleaning?

Cavity wall cleaning can often help in properties where there is a cavity wall but the wall seems to have rising damp, this can be caused by debris in the cavity that is bridging from the outer skin of the property to the inner skin. It can take decades before the debris in the cavity becomes a problem but cleaning it out can be a better solution than having a damp proof course installed.

If you are getting damp patches all over your walls after having cavity wall insulation installed then you may need to remove the cavity wall insulation.

What is Dry Rot?

Dry Rot is the most serious form of timber decay because of its ability to travel through buildings causing extensive structural damage.Named ‘Dry Rot’ because of its ability to grow into dry areas, this clever fungus has developed the ability to soak up moisture from timber, totally drying it out, and then develop strands which can travel across and through bricks and mortar to other timbers in unventilated conditions.

Timber can become damp for a number of reasons. Among the most common causes are leaking washing machines, shower trays, baths, condensation etc...
